BROADLEAF MUSTARD (100g)

$20.00

FIRE! FIRE! Fire in my mouth! OK so maybe we’re exaggerating a little bit, but this mustard here is no joke. Survivors have claimed that the leaves are seriously spicy and taste a fair bit like wasabi. Makes sense, seeing as how this variety was bred in Japan, home of the tear-jerking horseradish. Depending on the prevailing weather conditions, the textured leaves may range from purple to green. If you can’t handle the heat, lightly steam, sauté or stir-fry it to take the bite out. Or surprise that sandwich thief in your office with a single unsuspecting well-hidden leaf, sit back and enjoy the show.

COLLARD (100g)

$20.00

Collards may be a long time favourite in the Southern US States, but they found themselves upon the tables of Greeks and Romans who feasted on this earth long before we did. A close relative to kale, their milder demeanour allows them to be readily paired with both rich and light flavours alike. Down in the Deep South, you will almost be certain to find collards sitting at the bottom of your bowl of heart-warming stew. Their antioxidant and cholesterol lowering properties make them just about one of the healthiest leafy vegetables around.

You may know it as Japanese mustard, and whilst it too contains the bitter, peppery, piquant flavours of arugula and mustards, it is far more modest and therefore much more acceptable to some. Use the feathery leaves and juicy stalks for salads, stir-fries, light sautés, or nabamono, Japanese hot pots.

MALABAR SPINACH (100g)

$20.00

MALABAR SPINACH (100g)

$20.00

While most salad greens shy away from the heat of summer, Malabar Spinach lets loose its full potential, sprouting glossy green leaves and contrasting red stems left and right. Its flavour is not exactly like that of English spinach but it comes close to it when it’s cooked, and better yet, its thicker, juicier leaves hold up better and don’t wilt quite so much. They are absolutely delicious sautéed with eggs or added to a curry. On the other hand, having them raw is a whole different story; the succulent leaves will have you thinking of citrus and peppers whilst you sink your teeth into that scrumptious sandwich.
